Children are busy. They have school, they have friends, they have sports and they have homework. Don’t forget the screen time. It seems like there isn’t enough time left to squeeze in another activity. But encouraging your child to be more active is important for their overall health. As a parent, you can help your child lead an active lifestyle by finding creative ways to promote physical activity in them. Encouraging kids to be more active doesn’t need to feel forced or like an obligation – it can instead be something that your child looks forward to doing and something that you both enjoy as a family. Here are some creative ways to promote physical activity in your child.
7 Creative ways to promote physical activity in your child
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children spend at least an hour a day engaged in physical activity. Unfortunately, many kids don’t get anywhere close to this standard. A study by the CDC revealed that 54 percent of children fail to meet the standards for aerobic activity.
Being active benefits kids in many ways. It helps them grow stronger bones and muscles, it improves their mental focus and concentration, and it reduces stress while increasing self-esteem. Being physically active also helps kids combat obesity, which is an ever-growing concern among young people today. If your child isn’t getting the recommended amount of exercise, here are some creative ways you can promote physical activity for children.

Go for a family walk after dinner
This is one of creative ways you can promote physical activity in children. One of the easiest ways to get your family more active is by going for a walk after dinner. You can even make it a tradition, walking after dinner each day. You can talk about what happened at school, what happened at work and what is happening in your child’s life. The fresh air will help you and your family unwind and relax after a busy day. It can also be a great way to help your child de-stress and get the sleep they need.
After a busy day, many kids don’t have the energy to go for a walk. Instead, go for a slow walk after dinner with your child. They can walk at their own pace, rest when they need to and still reap the benefits of being outside. Studies have shown that getting outside has many positive health benefits, including helping kids sleep better.
Have a weekly activity night
This is another one of the creative ways you can promote physical activity in children. If your child is old enough to have a part-time job, then you might have more free time. For other parents, you may still be working a full-time job. Whatever your situation, it can be hard to find extra time to be active. Kids are busy too, with school and extracurricular activities. But it is important to carve out time to be active as a family, so look for ways to make that happen.
One idea is to have a weekly activity night. Go bowling, play a board game, go to a trampoline park (if you have one near you) or do another fun activity. This will give you time to interact with your child and also get some activity in. You can even try to make it a competition to see who can win.
Turn up the music and dance together
Kids love music, and you can use that to your advantage to promote physical activity for child. Turn up the music and dance with your child. Dance can be a great form of exercise, and it doesn’t feel like it because it is fun. Kids can dance to almost anything and they love to show off what they can do. You can take this two ways.
You can show your child how to dance correctly, or you can let your child show you how they dance. This can be a great way to bond with your child. But it can also be a great way to get some exercise. This is one of the most creative ways to promote physical activity
Go on hikes as a family
Hiking is a great way to be active as a family. It can also be a great bonding experience. You can choose a hike that is easy enough for your child to do. Or you can take turns carrying your child on your back. This can be a great way to encourage your child to be more active. It can also be a great way to spend time as a family. This is one of the most enjoyable physical activity for children
Hikes can be as short or as long as you want them to be. If you are just starting out and have young children, you may want to choose a short hike. If you have older kids, you may want to try a longer hike. It can be a great way to explore your local area or nearby cities and get some fresh air and exercise at the same time.
Take the stairs instead of the elevator
You can’t always plan where and when you will be active, but there are a few creative ways that you can switch up your daily routine to add some physical activity for children in when you can. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator whenever you can. This can add a few extra flights a day and help you build some extra steps into your day. If you have a child, take the stairs together whenever possible. This can help get your child more active and help them build up their muscles and endurance. Stairs can also be a great way to get your child out of their comfort zone and doing something new.
Go rock climbing with your child.
Rock climbing is a great way to get active. It can also be something that you can do as a family together. This is a great activity for kids of all ages, including toddlers and preschoolers. You can also go with friends who have kids. Rock climbing can be done indoors or outdoors. You can find indoor rock climbing gyms near you. Indoor climbing is typically easier and well-suited for children of all ages, while outdoor climbing can be more challenging and dangerous. Be sure to check out the facility you choose and choose one that is appropriate for your child’s age and skill level.
Use gaming time as an opportunity to be active
Many kids love video games. While they can be a great way to pass the time and be active, many children spend far too much time playing video games. You want your child to be active, but you also want them to have other interests and be well-rounded. You can make video games more active by finding games that require your child to move.
Look for games that use VR and allow your child to get up and move around. Some games can even have your child do push-ups or squats. Using video games as an opportunity to be active can help your child get outside of their comfort zone and try something new. This is one of the fun physical activities for kids.

These days kids are becoming very inactive due to excessive exposure of digital world. And this leads to less creativity in them. I agree with all your points. These are indeed very essential to boost healthy physical development among kids. I try to do many of these listed activities like turning the music on and then dancing crazily with my daughter.
Dancing is a great way to stay active
Anything that promotes physical activity is a good thing- not just for kids, but for the adults, too. I like the idea of taking a family hike together the most. It’s exercise, yes, but if you pick a scenic place, it can be rewarding in other ways as well.
So true. Thanks for reading and commenting
My family loves to go on walks/hikes/bike rides together. We also try to go to the pool at least a few times per week during the summer since it’s too hot to do much else outside here. My boys don’t play “active” video games, but they are constantly jumping around while playing so we always have joked they are getting their exercise when they play because they can’t sit still!
Hiking is a great way to explore and stay active. Good to know that your boys are active. My little one also cannot sit.
These are such fantastic ideas. It’s important to make physical activity fun so the kids learn to love it rather than run away from it.
Thanks!
