Healthy Eating Habits for Kids
Kids will eat almost anything if it’s disguised in a snack. With the growing variety of junk foods and the lack of healthy options in school cafeterias, it’s no wonder that many children are turning to unhealthy snacks. In fact, most kids are hungry at some point during the day. Healthy eating habits for kids starts with proper nutrition at home, not in school. Parents can play a role in encouraging healthy eating by implementing strategies at home. Some simple changes at home can also teach children about portion control, taste preferences and the importance of being active. Here are some healthy eating habits for kids.
Teach Kids About Nutrition
It’s important to be upfront with your kids about nutrition. Explain to them what foods are good and bad for them and why. Kids will learn by example, and if your family eats a balanced diet, they’ll pick up on it quickly. Start a discussion early and keep it going throughout the year. One day isn’t enough to teach kids about nutrition, so try to find time throughout the day when you can discuss healthy eating habits with your child.

Set Up an Eating Area
Set up a designated area for snacks or for those times when family meals are the plan. This will help keep the area organized and clean, which will make it easier for the whole family to eat together. It’s also important to have an eating area that’s somewhere your child feels comfortable.
Some kids may feel more relaxed if they have their own space, while others may enjoy eating in the kitchen with their parents. You can also designate certain foods as “off-limits” in your eating area. For example, if your child frequently snags snacks that are high in sugar, put those snacks in a spot where they’re out of sight. That way, your child will be more likely to obey other rules that apply to that area.

Swear-Free Zone
An off-limits zone is a great way to keep your eating area organized and focused on healthy eating habits. But this is also a wonderful time to reinforce the no-swear-free zone at home. Swear words can be confusing for young children, and it’s important to keep all language appropriate. Mention that words like “darn” and “gosh” are off-limits and make it clear that other words aren’t to be used either. Limit the number of people who are in the swear-free zone. It’s important that your child feels comfortable and that others aren’t influenced by his/her language habits.

Have Breakfast Together
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It provides energy, helps kids focus and keeps them full until lunch time. It’s also a time when families can discuss the day’s plans together. It’s important to have breakfast together even if your family doesn’t regularly eat breakfast together. Many families will make a special effort to eat breakfast together during the summer months when kids are out of school. Breakfast is also a great time to model healthy eating habits. You can talk about school snacks, ask what your child would like for breakfast or try some healthier options as a family.

Pack a Healthy Lunch
School lunch programs can be beneficial for many families. However, even when the meal is nutritious, it may not be the best option for everyone. If your family doesn’t regularly eat lunch together, it may be a better idea to pack a healthy packed lunch. You can also encourage your child to bring a healthy snack from home to school. That way, your child will be less likely to eat unhealthy foods in the cafeteria. You can encourage your child to eat a healthy snack even if he/she doesn’t normally like them. While it doesn’t hurt to try new things, your child may prefer other fruits, vegetables or other foods if they’re not offered at home.
Have Dinner As a Family
Eating a healthy dinner together can be a fun family activity or a special treat after a busy day at school. It may also encourage your child to eat regular meals at other times, which can be beneficial. Eating a healthy dinner together also gives you an opportunity to talk to your child about nutrition. This can be especially important if your child is picky and/or isn’t interested in trying new foods.

Make Cooking Together Fun
Eating at home is better for your child’s nutrition and taste preferences. But that doesn’t mean your child has to like everything he/she eats. In fact, encouraging healthy cooking and taste exploration can help your child discover new foods that he/she may like.
You can also encourage healthy cooking by keeping a variety of healthy options in your fridge and pantry. That way, your child will be more likely to make healthy meals even if he/she isn’t feeling adventurous. Get Active with Your Child
It’s important to get your kids moving every day, whether it’s at home or at school. Physical activity helps your child burn calories, build muscle and develop strength. It can also improve concentration, reduce stress and reduce feelings of anxiety. The more your child moves, the better. It doesn’t matter how you do it, so long as your child is moving. How your child moves may also depend on his/her age and developmental stage.
If your child is young, you can encourage movement by doing simple things like dancing, jumping and skipping. If your child is older, encourage movement by getting involved in your child’s activities. Your child may enjoy participating in sports, staying active at home through dance or music, or doing crafts.
